Colleague says US professor still jailed in Rwanda
MINNEAPOLIS — A colleague says a U.S. law professor charged in Rwanda with denying the country’s 1994 genocide remains jailed.
Gena Berglund says she spoke Friday with U.S. embassy officials in Kigali, Rwanda who attended the hearing for professor Peter Erlinder. Berglund has worked with Erlinder in Minnesota on humanitarian issues.
Berglund says a judge in Rwanda is expected to issue a decision in Erlinder’s case Monday.
Erlinder’s daughter also told the Minneapolis Star Tribune on Friday that she had a “very positive” meeting with a Rwandan embassy official.
Sarah Erlinder says her concern is her father’s health and safety.
Peter Erlinder was in Rwanda to help the legal defense of an opposition leader running for president who is accused of promoting genocidal ideology.
