Police: 3 shot at Kraft plant in Pa., shooter held

PHILADELPHIA — Three people were shot inside a Kraft Foods Inc. facility in the city’s northeast section on Thursday, and the shooter was taken into custody, police said.

The conditions of the wounded people remained uncertain, and police didn’t immediately say if anyone had been killed.

Officers were dispatched to the plant of the nation’s largest food manufacturer Thursday night after receiving reports of gunfire inside, Lt. Frank Vanore said.

Around 9:45 p.m., a woman called 911 on her cell phone from inside the facility and turned herself in, police said. She was quickly apprehended. It was unknown if she’s an employee.

Television footage showed workers leaving the plant of the Northfield, Ill.-based company, whose products include Oreo cookies, Philadelphia cream cheese and Oscar Mayer bacon.

Dough mixer Andy Ryan, who has worked at the plant for nearly 30 years, said he was on the third floor when the sound of the shots echoed through the building.

“I heard the gunfire, and I ran,” he told The Associated Press, his apron still on. “As I was running down the steps they were yelling, ‘Oh, my God, there’s three people shot!’”

The Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper reported that about 100 people were inside the plant, which used to be known as the Nabisco factory, but had been cleared out.

Several telephone calls and e-mails to Kraft on Thursday night weren’t immediately returned.
