Dozens protest fatal shooting by LA police

LOS ANGELES — A protest over the fatal shooting of a Guatemalan immigrant by police escalated in Los Angeles when some of the demonstrators threw bottles at officers and refused to disperse.

Television news footage shows a chaotic scene with people throwing bottles and plastic crates at officers in riot gear late Monday near MacArthur Park.

The protest began in Monday afternoon. Dozens of people outraged over the shooting of a man with a knife took to the street and marched between the location of Sunday’s shooting scene and the Rampart police station.

Police said officers shot at the man when he refused to drop the knife and lunged at them.
