Teen charged with knifing child’s 13-year-old mom

SAN DIEGO — A 14-year-old boy accused in the nonfatal stabbing of the 13-year-old mother of his baby was in custody Tuesday after being charged with attempted murder in San Diego County.

The teen stabbed the girl in the neck at his home on June 16 in National City, where he lived with his parents, according to police.

The girl has since been released from the hospital and returned home, where she lives with her parents and her 18-month-old daughter, said National City Sgt. Dennis Leach.

The two teens apparently were arguing over who the girl hangs out with and her whereabouts while she cares for their baby, Leach said.

Their names weren’t released because of their ages.

San Diego County’s Child Protective Services was also looking into the matter, Leach said.

“When this was discovered, it stirred up a lot of inquiries, like how did an 11-year-old girl give birth in the first place without stirring up attention?” Leach said.

Police were trying to locate the baby’s birth certificate to determine whether she was born in the United States or in Mexico, Leach said. It was unclear whether additional charges could be filed, he said.

Deputy District Attorney Jorge Del Portillo said the boy was also charged Monday with corporal injury, assault, assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats.

The teenager, who remains in San Diego Juvenile Court until a June 30 hearing, could be in custody until age 25 if convicted, the prosecutor said.
