Doc arraigned in killing of Yale doctor
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — An unemployed doctor charged with fatally shooting a Yale University doctor with whom he once worked in New York City was found with handguns matching shell casings from the slaying scene, a prosecutor said Tuesday.
Investigators also found loaded magazines, Google directions to the shooting location and a picture of the victim, Vajinder Toor, prosecutor Devant Joiner said at the New Haven Superior Court arraignment of 44-year-old Lishan Wang.
Wang is accused of shooting Toor outside Toor’s home in Branford on Monday. Police say Wang also shot at Toor’s pregnant wife, but missed. Wang was arrested in a van witnesses described to police and is charged with murder, attempted murder and firearms offenses.
Wang had worked with Toor at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in New York City. He had a history of confrontations with Toor and other colleagues that led to his dismissal.
Wang, who wore a dark blue sports jacket and loose white trousers, hung his head throughout Tuesday’s hearing and did not speak. No plea was entered. A Chinese citizen from Beijing, Wang was assisted by a Mandarin interpreter.
Wang’s public defender, Scott Jones, requested his client be placed in protective custody. Jones declined to comment after the hearing.
A judge found probable cause to hold Wang and continued his bail at $2 million. The next hearing was set for May 11.
Bail commissioner Sharon Moye-Johnson said Wang had declined to be interviewed by commission staff, but he has no previous criminal record.
An arrest document filed in the case says Wang is married and the father of three. His last known address is Marietta, Ga.
Toor was a postdoctoral fellow at the Yale School of Medicine who was working with the infectious disease section of Yale-New Haven Hospital.
