Russia terrorism victims remembered in NYC
NEW YORK — A “Bell of Hope” near the World Trade Center site in New York City tolled in memory of the Russian subway bombing victims.
Prayers of peace were offered Wednesday at St. Paul’s Chapel in lower Manhattan as the bell was rung by clergy and Russian officials. The ceremony is based on a New York City firefighters’ salute to fallen comrades.
Andrey Yushmanov, the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in New York City, described the Monday bombings as “one and the same chain of international terrorism.” Thirty-nine people were killed and scores of commuters were wounded.
The city of London presented the bell to New York City a year after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. It also has rung following attacks in London, Madrid and Mumbai, India.
