Jail: No visits between Dugard’s alleged abductors
PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Authorities in California are fighting a couple’s request to see each other in jail while they await trial on charges of kidnapping and raping Jaycee Dugard.
Lawyers for El Dorado County filed papers in court Tuesday opposing the request from Phillip and Nancy Garrido. Their lawyers want jail officials to allow the two to meet face-to-face so they can talk about the case, their finances and their hopes for Dugard and the two daughters she had with Phillip Garrido.
In the papers, Chief Assistant County Counsel Edward Knapp says California law does not give jail inmates a constitutional right to visit each other. He says arranging such visits for the Garridos would overburden jail staff.
A Superior Court judge is scheduled to consider the visitation request Friday.
