Suspect in Chicago bomb plot due in court
CHICAGO — A 22-year-old man accused in a Chicago bomb plot is due in a court for a bail hearing.
Sami Samir Hassoun remains in federal custody. His attorney, Myron Auerbach, says it’s not clear if the judge will rule on bail at Wednesday’s hearing.
Hassoun is a Lebanese citizen who has lived in Chicago for about three years. He’s charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and of an explosive device.
A federal complaint alleges he placed a backpack near Wrigley Field thinking it contained a bomb. Instead, it was a fake bomb given to him by FBI undercover agents.
Auerbach said Tuesday that he needs to study the case further before deciding on a defense strategy. But he left open the possibility of citing entrapment.
