Widow of Guatemalan killed by LAPD wants justice

GUATEMALA CITY — The widow of a Guatemalan immigrant shot to death by a Los Angeles police officer says her family hopes to get justice.

Isabel Marroquin isn’t saying what she wants. But she says her husband, Manuel Jamines, helped support her and her three children, ages 13, 12 and 9. She calls him “an honest and hardworking person.”

Marroquin made the comments Tuesday while waiting at Guatemala City’s airport for the arrival of her husband’s body from California.

Guatemala’s government says it will provide a lawyer to Marroquin if she decides to sue Los Angeles police.

Police officials and witnesses say Jamines was threatening people with a knife when he was fatally shot Sept. 5. His death led to several days of violent protests.
