Gunman kills 6, wounds 14 others in Slovakia

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — A gunman has killed six people and wounded 14 others in Bratislava, the Slovak news agency reported Monday.

The news agency TASR said the shooting took place midmorning on the streets of the Devinska Nova Ves neighborhood on the outskirts of the Slovak capital. It said the man, who has not been identified, opened fire on passers-by and shot through windows into buildings.

Local media reported later that the shooter may have killed himself, but police would not immediately confirm the report.

Dominika Sulkova, a spokeswoman for the Bratislava emergency medical service, told The Associated Press that seven people were dead — four women and three men — and 14 others had been wounded. She could not confirm that the shooter was among the dead.

A 3-year-old child was among the wounded, TASR quoted Dana Kamenicka, a Bratislava hospital spokeswoman, as saying.

Emergency crews blocked off the scene and authorities urged people to stay indoors.

Police made no immediate comment on the attack but were holding a news conference later Monday.
