Police: Arizona soldier victim of identity theft

MESA, Ariz. — Police have arrested a man accused of assuming the identity of an Arizona soldier stationed in Iraq.

Mesa police say 21-year-old Richard L. Schrodt was taken into custody Monday and booked into jail on suspicion of identity theft and forgery.

They say Schrodt and Richard Burke were high school acquaintances and looked alike, helping Schrodt obtain a duplicate of Burke’s driver’s license.

Burke’s mother notified police after her son discovered $6,000 missing from his bank account and someone was trying to buy a new truck using his name. Schrodt was arrested at a Mesa apartment that police say he rented under Burke’s name.
