Judge allows trial delay in Cleveland bodies case

CLEVELAND — A judge has granted a second trial delay for a Cleveland man charged with killing 11 women and dumping their remains around his home.

Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County Common Pleas Judge Dick Ambrose on Thursday postponed the trial of 50-year-old Anthony Sowell (SOH’-wehl) until 2011. The trial was scheduled to begin Sept. 7.

Sowell’s lawyers say they need more time to interview more than 150 witnesses, review forensic evidence and conduct mental health evaluations.

Ambrose says the trial will begin sometime before March 1. Prosecutors opposed the delay, saying the defense has had more than eight months to prepare its case.
