NRCC pays fine to settle FEC case

WASHINGTON — The National Republican Congressional Committee has agreed to pay a fine to settle a case involving alleged embezzlement by a former treasurer.

The Federal Election Commission announced Wednesday that the committee agreed to pay a $10,000 civil fine. The FEC says that in part due to the apparent theft of several hundred thousand dollars by the NRCC’s then-treasurer from 2001 to 2007, the committee filed a number of inaccurate finance reports.

A judge last month approved a partial settlement of a federal lawsuit against the former treasurer, Christopher Ward. The government seized proceeds from the sale of Ward’s Maryland house, arguing it was financed with stolen money. The attorney listed in court papers as Ward’s lawyer didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
