Iowa DE Binns arrested on drunken driving charge

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Iowa defensive end Broderick Binns was arrested early Friday and charged with drunken driving.

A police report said Binns was pulled over near campus by University Heights police for traffic violations. The report said Binns had watery eyes, smelled of alcohol and showed impaired speech and balance.

Police said the 20-year-old Binns initially denied drinking. He later acknowledged having several drinks and failed a preliminary breath test.

Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz issued a statement saying Binns will receive “some form” of suspension along with community service and counseling. He said he was “very disappointed to learn of the incident.”

Binns is a 6-foot-2, 261-pound junior from St. Paul, Minn., and a member of the team’s leadership group. He is expected to start this season on what should be one of the nation’s top defensive lines.

Binns had six sacks and 10 tackles for losses last season. He blocked a late field goal in Iowa’s 17-16 win over Northern Iowa in their season opener and helped anchor a defense that held Georgia Tech to just 155 yards in a 24-14 victory in the Orange Bowl.

Iowa finished 11-2 last season and ranked No. 7 in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll.
