The chairman of the parole board Robert Doyle concluded after three-hour hearing that the convict was not yet suitable for parole as according to the parole board she has not been able to gain complete insight into the crime and the motivation that propelled it.

The three-hour parole hearing of Leslie Van Houten saw the convict reading out a statement in which she apologized to the victim’s family for the pain she had inflicted to them. Leslie Van Houten said that she understands the grief of the victim’s family and also gave a private apology to them. Leslie Van Houten also added in her statement that she knows the enormity of the crime committed by her and during her stay in the prison for the last 41 years she had gained insight into the matter.

However, Louis Smaldino, a member of the La Bianca family talked about the tremendous anguish that the family is enduring till date and suggested that Leslie Van Houten should have been executed for the crime committed by her. The member urged the board to deny parole to the convict.

Both Robert Doyel and deputy commissioner Carol Bentley said that they were disappointed that Leslie Van Houten had not spoken to them directly.
