Japanese fan, China journalists robbed
JOHANNESBURG — Three Chinese journalists covering the World Cup have been robbed at gunpoint inside their hotel, police said.
Capt. Leonard Hlathi said Tuesday that authorities have detained three suspects involved in a predawn theft. Hlathi said the three journalists and another Chinese national were robbed of money, cell phones and a laptop inside their hotel rooms in Nelspruit, a town northeast of Johannesburg.
There have been several cases of robberies targeting journalists.
A Japanese fan returning to his hotel in central Bloemfontein after his team won its first match was robbed of a camera. No one was hurt in Monday’s incident in the central South African town, police spokesman Sam Makhele said. Makhele said investigations are ongoing.
