Uruguay soccer official says safe broken into

KIMBERLEY, South Africa — Uruguay’s soccer association says money was taken from a safe in the Cape Town hotel room of one of its officials.

The theft occurred Friday morning, several hours before Uruguay’s match with France. The association’s president, Sebastian Bauza, says police and hotel management were notified.

Bauza added Saturday that hotel management said they weren’t responsible. The victim was Uruguayan official Ernesto Rodriguez Altez. Bauza says Rodriguez shared the room with another delegation official, but that person didn’t have any connection with the theft.

Another Uruguayan official said the amount stolen was more than $4,000.
