Armed suspect barricaded inside Calif. apartment

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A standoff between deputies and an armed suspect who has barricaded himself inside a Sacramento apartment with a 1-year-old boy is stretching into a second day.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Curran says deputies exchanged gunfire with 25-year-old Anthony Alvarez early Thursday morning.

They aren’t sure if Alvarez was hit. Curran says deputies are concerned about the baby’s welfare because they haven’t heard any noises from the child for several hours.

Police went to the apartment complex around noon Wednesday to arrest Alvarez on suspicion of three armed robberies in the San Francisco Bay area and firing at an officer in Concord on Friday.

When officers arrived, Alvarez grabbed the child — a cousin’s son — and barricaded himself inside the apartment.
