Man arrested in airport breach agrees to treatment
DETROIT — An Ohio man accused of walking through a passenger screening checkpoint at Detroit Metropolitan Airport without a boarding pass has reached a deal with prosecutors in which he’s undergoing psychiatric treatment.
The U.S. attorney’s office in Detroit says Kalyan L. Policherla agreed last month to a year of treatment and other terms. In exchange, a misdemeanor charge of violating federal security requirements was dismissed.
Defense lawyer William Hill says Policherla has a history of mental illness.
Authorities say the Bryan, Ohio, man walked through a checkpoint on Feb. 8, prompting an evacuation of the airport in the Detroit suburb of Romulus.
Policherla still faces a misdemeanor charge of resisting and obstructing police in Wayne County Circuit Court.
