Somali pirates seize Greek ship off East Africa
NAIROBI, Kenya — The European Union’s anti-piracy force says Somali pirates have hijacked a Greek-owned ship with 26 crew members in the Indian Ocean.
The Liberian-flagged MV Eleni P was headed to India when pirates seized it 250 nautical miles off the coast of Oman Wednesday morning.
The EU Naval Force says the crew consists of 23 Filipinos, two Romanians and 1 Indian. They are reported to be safe.
At least 20 vessels are being held by Somali pirates.
Somalia’s 19 years of lawlessness has allowed piracy to flourish. Pirates are earning multimillion dollar ransoms from successful hijackings.
