SS guard’s statements used at Demjanjuk trial

MUNICH — A former SS guard at the Nazi’s Sobibor death camp whose past testimony is being used in the trial of John Demjanjuk says all guards there were involved in killing Jews.

Former SS Sgt. 1st Class Erich Bauer, sentenced to death for his role in running the camp’s gas chambers, told investigators in 1961 and 1962 that all guards were involved in the extermination process, according to statements read Wednesday in Demjanjuk’s trial in Munich.

Bauer’s statements made no mention of Demjanjuk, 90, who denies serving as a guard at any camp. The Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk, a former auto worker in the U.S., is charged with 27,900 counts of accessory to murder on allegations he was at the Sobibor camp, in Poland.

Bauer, whose sentence was commuted to life, died in 1980.
