Plea deal reached in attack on Milwaukee mayor
MILWAUKEE — The defense attorney for a 21-year-old man accused of attacking Milwaukee’s mayor last summer says he will plead guilty to first-degree reckless injury and avoid a trial.
Defense attorney Anthony Cotton says the deal also requires Anthony Peters to plead guilty to two counts of disorderly conduct and a bail jumping charge. He says three other charges will be dismissed at a hearing Tuesday.
Prosecutor Mark Sanders wouldn’t comment Monday. Peters was scheduled for trial May 3.
A criminal complaint says Peters was arguing with his daughter’s grandmother when Mayor Tom Barrett intervened as he was leaving the Wisconsin State Fair. The complaint says Peters hit Barrett with a metal object, injuring his head, mouth and hand.
