Van kills NY woman in front yard, slams into house
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — An 18-year-old was arrested on a vehicular manslaughter charge after police say she crashed into a house, killing a New York woman in her front yard.
Nassau County Detective Lt. Kevin Smith says the 69-year-old victim was standing next to her lawnmower when the van went off the road and across her yard. It hit her and smashed through the front wall of the house.
Police say the teenager also was charged with driving while impaired and driving without a license following Tuesday’s accident in Hempstead (HEHMP’-stehd).
Smith says it appears the driver was speeding.
The victim’s name was not immediately released. A neighbor said the woman loved working in her yard.
