Police: Teen in Mass. bullying case drove drunk
HOLYOKE, Mass. — A Massachusetts teenager charged in the bullying of a 15-year-old girl who committed suicide has pleaded not guilty to drunken driving.
Eighteen-year-old Austin Renaud was arraigned Tuesday in Holyoke District Court. Judge Mark Mason released him on personal recognizance with an 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew and ordered him to avoid drugs and alcohol, enforced with random testing.
Police say Renaud was arrested early Sunday after tests showed his blood-alcohol level was .15.
Renaud has pleaded not guilty to statutory rape in the bullying case. He’s among six teens charged in what prosecutors called the “unrelenting” bullying of Phoebe Prince at South Hadley High School.
Renaud’s lawyer, Terrence Dunphy, says his client has been living “day to day” with the worldwide attention from that case.
