4 St. Bonaventure basketball players charged

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Four St. Bonaventure men’s basketball players were charged Friday with harassment and disorderly conduct, charges connected to an on-campus fight in which two men were stabbed.

State police served summonses on junior guards Malcolm Eleby and Lewis Leonard, sophomore forward Da’Quan Cook and freshman forward Brett Roseboro. They each face at least one count of both harassment and disorderly conduct, noncriminal violations that rank below the level of a misdemeanor.

Brian O’Connell, the players’ lawyer, said he hopes to have the case resolved by next month given the minor nature of the charges. He said a hearing in the town of Allegany court had been scheduled for Monday but was pushed back to May 10.

Police wouldn’t say exactly how the players were connected to the fight or the stabbing, but they said the investigation continued and that other arrests were pending.

St. Bonaventure athletic director Steve Watson said in a statement that the four players were “drawn into a fight.”

James Chatmon and Rameek Boyd were stabbed during a fight at about 3 a.m. on March 21, police said. Boyd is a member of Jamestown Community College basketball team. Chatmon had been dismissed from the Jamestown team for academic reasons. Both were treated at a hospital and released.

Watson said the school will wait for the legal process to conclude before determining whether to sanction the players.

“We’re taking this very seriously. We have high expectations for our student athletes, and will hold them accountable for their actions,” Watson said. “We’re glad that we seem to be coming to some resolution now.”
