Chicago man sentenced to 60 years in crime spree
DECATUR, Ill. — A Chicago man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for his role in a 2007 crime spree in Illinois that left a sheriff’s deputy dead.
Macon County Judge Tim Steadman sentenced 26-year-old Yusef Kareem Brown on Friday in Decatur. Brown pleaded guilty in September to home invasion and aggravated kidnapping.
The June 21, 2007, crime spree included the shooting death of Douglas County sheriff’s deputy Tommy Martin.
Martin was shot as he drove past Brown and another Chicago man, 29-year-old William B. Thompson, on his way to a home they had just burglarized.
Thompson was sentenced last year to life in prison after pleading guilty to murder in Martin’s death.
Brown was arrested in Arcola, about 40 miles south of Champaign, after a high-speed chase.
