Suspect on trial for Bronco’s death begins defense
DENVER — A man too afraid to testify against the defendant accused of killing Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams has changed his mind after a night in jail.
The news came Friday at the end of the defense’s first day of testimony. The witness had been called Thursday by the prosecution before it finished its case. Prosecutors say the witness is expected to testify that 26-year-old Willie Clark admitted to killing Williams in a drive-by shooting on New Year’s Day 2007.
Clark says he is innocent. His attorneys called witnesses to try to focus on another suspect.
The man who previously refused to testify is expected to do so when the defense finishes presenting evidence.
Clark faces first-degree murder and other charges in the cornerback’s slaying.
