Penalty phase begins in serial killer’s OC trial

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Jurors who convicted a serial killer of murdering a girl and four women must now decide whether he should receive the death penalty.

The penalty phase of Alcala’s trial starts Tuesday morning in an Orange County courtroom. Prosecutors say two women who survived sexual assaults by Alcala will testify.

Jurors last week convicted the 66-year-old of killing 12-year-old Robin Samsoe and four women in the late 1970s. It is the third time he has been found guilty of killing Samsoe. The previous convictions and death sentences were overturned.

The former “Dating Game” contestant could be sentenced to death or life in prison without parole.
