Suspect charged in 1972 slaying in Seattle

SEATTLE — Prosecutors have charged a 71-year-old suspect in a slaying that took place in 1972 — one of the oldest cold cases in Seattle.

King County prosecutors say DNA evidence processed at a Washington State Patrol crime lab led them to charge Samuel Pietro Evans of Everett with murder Tuesday in the death of Jackson Schley, who was shot during a robbery in which his wife was kidnapped and raped.

Evans was arrested Thursday and will be arraigned March 15 in Seattle.

Charging papers say DNA evidence also links Evans to the 1968 stabbing death of a man in Seattle.
