Washington state trooper sues man in shooting

SEATTLE — A Washington State Patrol trooper has filed a $3 million lawsuit against the man accused of shooting him in the head in Long Beach.

Trooper Scott Johnson’s lawyer filed suit Thursday against 45-year-old Martin Jones of Seaview, who was arrested this week for investigation of assault and attempted murder. Jones was being held in South Bend on $5 million bail.

Court papers say Jones is the husband of a woman whose van was being towed early Saturday after a drunken driving stop. Johnson was supervising the impounding of the van when he was shot in the back of the head.

His lawyer Jeffery Campiche says Johnson filed suit because he feels Jones should be required to compensate him for his suffering.

The trooper was released earlier this week from a Portland, Ore., hospital and is on medical leave from the patrol. He reportedly has bullet fragments lodged in his head.
