Trial to open in Philly armored car murder case
PHILADELPHIA — The murder trial for a man accused of killing two armored car guards in 2007 is set to begin in Philadelphia.
Opening statements are scheduled for Monday in the trial of 38-year-old Mustafa Ali. He is accused of killing a pair of retired Philadelphia police officers as they were servicing an ATM at outside a northeast Philadelphia bank.
Sixty-five-year-old William Widmaier and 54-year-old Joseph Alullo were killed. A third guard was injured in the shooting.
Police say Ali confessed and led them to the murder weapons following his arrest.
Prosecutors and defense attorneys have been placed under a gag order by the judge in the case.
Ali, formerly Shawn Steele, was convicted of robbing five banks in Philadelphia in the early 1990s.
