Ex-mother-in-law suspected of shooting UT teacher

SALT LAKE CITY — Police have identified the suspect in the fatal shooting of a preschool teacher as the victim’s 70-year-old former mother-in-law.

Mary Nance Hanson is accused of firing multiple shots into the car of 34-year-old Tetyana Nikitina as she prepared to leave Friday from the Salt Lake Community Action Program Head Start.

According to court records obtained by the Deseret News, Nikitina filed for divorce from Dale Jankowski in February 2005. Police say they think Jankowski is Hanson’s son.

Records show that twice after the divorce, Nikitina filed for protective orders against Jankowski, claiming cohabitant abuse.

Police say they have been unable to identify a specific event that may have triggered the shooting.

Hanson was booked into jail on suspicion of murder.
