UBS whistleblower to report to Pa. federal prison

MINERSVILLE, Pa. — A whistleblower in the tax evasion case against Swiss bank UBS AG is set to report to a federal prison in Pennsylvania.

Forty-four-year-old Bradley Birkenfeld says he’ll report to the Schuylkill (SKOO’-kul) County Federal Correctional Institution in Minersville on Friday afternoon.

Federal prosecutors say Birkenfeld helped spark a broad U.S. investigation into rich Americans’ use of secret Swiss bank accounts to evade taxes.

But prosecutors say Birkenfeld initially refused to confess his own misconduct. He was sentenced in August to more than three years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud conspiracy in federal court in Florida.
