Former BetonSports CEO sentenced to prison
ST. LOUIS — The former head of the online gambling site BetonSports has been sentenced to 33 months in prison after pleading guilty in April to federal racketeering conspiracy charges.
David Carruthers was CEO of the illegal, offshore sports-wagering business. The 52-year-old was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis.
Carruthers, of the United Kingdom, was the first major defendant to plead guilty in the case. He had agreed to testify against his co-defendants.
His attorney, Scott Rosenblum, did not return a phone call seeking comment.
Carruthers admitted in his guilty plea that the company falsely portrayed Web-based gambling as legal and caused customers to lose millions of dollars.
