Jailed Illinois sheriff facing new charges

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. — A southern Illinois sheriff already accused of selling marijuana, often while on duty, now faces charges of solicitation of murder for hire.

Gallatin County Sheriff Raymond Martin was arrested Saturday at the Jackson County Jail, where he’s being held on the drug charges.

His wife, 36-year-old Kristina Martin, and son, 20-year-old Cody Martin, were arrested as they came to visit him.

All three are being held on $1 million bond. They’re scheduled to make their first court appearance on Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear who their attorneys are.

Authorities wouldn’t release details on the new charges and wouldn’t say whether they’re related to the drug charges the sheriff already faces. He’s been in custody since May.
