Ex-Qwest CEO Nacchio insists on skipping hearing

DENVER — Former Qwest CEO Joe Nacchio is offering to pay his own way to Denver if a judge insists that he tell her in person that he’s waiving rights to attend re-sentencing hearings.

Nacchio is in prison in Pennsylvania on insider trading convictions. A federal judge wanted to see him before allowing him to skip hearings at which she will recalculate a six-year sentence, plus $71 million in fines and forfeitures, which an appeals court ruled were too harsh.

But Nacchio’s attorney said Wednesday the U.S. Marshals Service may not be able to transport Nacchio until May, and Nacchio doesn’t want to delay the hearings, one of which is set for April 21. The judge hasn’t ruled on Nacchio’s offer to come on his own.
