Man charged in stabbing at Kansas City college

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Witnesses say a man who was mumbling, pacing and carrying a knife in a college building where Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon was scheduled to speak stabbed a dean in the neck before being subdued.

Albert Dimmitt, the dean of instruction at Penn Valley Community College in Kansas City, was slashed in the neck Tuesday morning. He was in stable condition after surgery.

The Jackson County prosecutor later charged 22-year-old Casey Brezik of Raytown with two counts each of first-degree assault and armed criminal action. No hearing was set and there was no indication Brezik has an attorney.

Witnesses said a man entered the room where the news conference was to be held, bolted back out and stabbed Dimmitt in a hallway. Witnesses subdued the attacker, who was wearing a bulletproof vest.
