MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (GaeaTimes.com)- On Monday, the Mexican President Felipe Calderon’s war against drug traffickers got a major boost when the Mexican authorities captured ruthless drug lord, American-born Edgar Valdez Villarreal who is better known as “La Barbie“. The federal police confirmed the news to media sources and maintained that the officers captured Edgar Valdez Villarreal from a state surrounding Mexico City. It mentioned that the arrest is a part of the intelligence operation that was being carried out since June 2009. The government statement on the arrest provided no further details into the case. Edgar “La Barbie” Valdez Villarreal has been indicted for the smuggling of thousands of pounds of cocaine into United States.

Edgar Valdez Villarreal who has gained the nickname of “La Barbie” due to his doll-like looks, is suspected to be the third high-ranking drug lord who has been captured or killed this year by the Mexican police. Under the supervision of President Felipe Calderon, the Mexican intelligence department along with the police has been working tirelessly to bring under control the ever increasing drug war toll. The arrest of Edgar “la Barbie” Valdez Villarreal therefore comes as a significant achievement on the part of the government as he had been striving hard to take over the powerful Beltran Leyva organization, a major drug smuggling group. Edgar “la Barbie” Valdez Villarreal also is the past shared allegiance with Joaquin Guzman Loera, the most wanted man in Mexico.

As per media reports, a Houston lawyer who is representing Edgar “la Barbie” Valdez Villarreal has voiced his fear about the safety of his client in the hands of the Mexican authorities. Defense attorney Kent Schaffer has said that he does not think that anybody is safe in the hands of the Mexican military.
