NEW YORK (GaeaTimes.com)- Michael Enright, the 21-year-old honors student at the School of Visual Arts in New York, has been held without bail by a Manhattan district attorney after the former carried out a brutal attack on a Muslim taxi driver on Tuesday night. Michael Enright who slashed the throat of 44-year-old Bangladeshi Muslim driver Ahmed H. Sharif and also wounded his face, has been charged by the court with first-degree assault and second-degree attempted murder as a hate crime against Ahmed H. Sharif. He has also been charged for criminal possession of a weapon. Michael Enright had not entered any plea on Wednesday reportedly. If proven guilty of the charges, Michael Enright might receive an imprisonment sentence as long as 25 years.
The criminal complaint against Michael Enright at the Manhattan Criminal Court have held that the attack was carried out on Tuesday night inside Ahmed H. Sharif’s yellow cab on Manhattan’s East Side. The Police have alleged that Michael Enright was drunk when he hailed at the cab at the corner of Second Avenue and East 24th Street. The driver has reportedly mentioned that Michael Enright wanted to go to 42nd and Second.
In the cab, Michael Enright first started a friendly conversation by asking the driver his religion, but the conversation gradually turned ugly as the passenger started making fun of Muslims and their religion. He then told Ahmed H. Sharif, “Consider this as a checkpoint” and brought out a Leatherman knife to attack him. Reaching out at the driver through the plastic divider, Michael Enright slashed the throat of Ahmed H. Sharif. The attack has shocked and saddened the driver who is recuperating from the attack.
