Police: 2 officers, 3 other people shot in Harlem

NEW YORK — Shooting erupted in northern Manhattan late Saturday, leaving two police officers and two civilians wounded and another civilian dead, police said.

The gunfire occurred late Saturday night near 144th Street and Lennox Avenue, NYPD spokesman Sgt. Carlos Nieves said.

The civilian was dead on arrival at the hospital from a gunshot wound.

Nieves said the most seriously hurt officer was shot in his protective vest covering his chest and was hospitalized in stable condition. The other officer was being treated for a graze wound to the hand.

The two other civilians were hospitalized for gunshot wounds but Nieves said he doesn’t know their condition.

Nieves said he is awaiting details on what led up to the gunfire and it’s still not clear if it came during a confrontation between the officers and the three.

“I still have people at the scene and don’t have a working story yet,” Nieves told The Associated Press. “It’s unknown whether they’re (the civilians) suspects or victims of a previous shooting or whatever.”
