2 arrested in death of south Mississippi sheriff
LUCEDALE, Miss. — Two suspects in the death of a southeast Mississippi sheriff have been taken into custody.
The Highway Patrol and Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd tell WLOX-TV that 18-year-old Brandy Nicole Williams and 24-year-old Christopher Lee Baxter were arrested early Thursday.
Official say George County Sheriff Garry Welford was killed Wednesday after being struck by a vehicle while trying to make an arrest on a road near the Alabama state line. Investigators say Welford was throwing spikes on a road to try to stop a pickup truck when he was struck.
