LOS ANGELES (GaeaTimes.com)- Johannes Mehserle was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter yesterday by the Los Angeles Superior Judge Robert Perry who convicted him. Johannes Mehserle was accused of second degree murder for killing Oscar Grant, 22, on January 1, 2009. The police officer shot unarmed Oscar Grant while attempting to subdue him following a fight on New Year’s Day in the year 2009.
Johannes Mehserle case infuriated the citizens as they saw footage on the videos and on the web. This created lot of racial riots and fights in the city as the people protested against the killing. Yesterday, while the judge was giving his verdict, the handcuffed Bay Area Rapid Transit officer did not utter a word or show any reaction to the verdict that was given out. However, this verdict generated dissatisfaction and anger among the Oakland people who vehemently protested against the verdict as they expected Johannes Mehserle’s punishment to be harsher and were not at all satisfied by conviction.
28-year-old Johannes Mehserle, however, said that he had mistaken his pistol for an electric Taser weapon on his belt and as he tried to stop the fight when he had accidentally shot Oscar Grant. The family of the victim were upset yesterday after they got to know about the conviction of Johannes Mehserle, as involuntary manslaughter carries a jail sentence of two to four years. In comparison with the second degree murder charge, involuntary manslaughter is a very less punishment. The attorney also commented after the verdict that it was not the true representation of what happened to Oscar Grant.
