Southern California chase spans 150 miles, 3 hours

CAJON SUMMIT, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol says a three-hour chase that started with a carjacking and stretched from Chula Vista to the Cajon Pass ended when the car was rammed and the driver ran across the freeway.

The CHP identified the driver as 42-year-old Fred Eugene Hiser of Chula Vista.

Chula Vista police say Hiser demanded car keys at gunpoint Monday night from a 56-year-old woman, who did as she was told.

CHP officers took over the chase on Interstate 15.

A spike strip shredded some of the car’s tires.

Officers tried several so-called PIT maneuvers. One spun the car around and the driver continued south in the northbound lanes until another officer rammed the car into the center divider. The driver was captured after trying to run off.
