Kosher slaughterhouse boss faces 27-year jail term

DES MOINES, Iowa — A former vice president of an Iowa kosher slaughterhouse is facing 27 years in prison and an order to pay $27 million in restitution for financial fraud.

Chief U.S. District Court Judge Linda R. Reade is expected to sentence former Agriprocessor’s Inc. manager Sholom Rubashkin on Tuesday in Cedar Rapids. The judge released a memorandum outlining the sentence on Monday.

A jury found Rubashkin guilty last fall on 86 federal financial fraud charges.

Prosecutors sought a 25-year sentence. Rubashkin’s attorney, Guy Cook, calls the sentence “unfair and excessive” and plans to appeal.

Rubashkin oversaw the plant in Postville that gained attention in 2008 after a large-scale immigration raid.
