Calif. man who dismembered wife sentenced to death
LAS VEGAS — A former math teacher who killed and dismembered his wife in a Las Vegas hotel room because he didn’t want her to get half his family’s estate in a divorce has been sentenced to death.
The same Nevada jury that convicted 70-year-old John Matthus Watson III of first-degree murder Thursday deliberated less than two hours before handing down the sentence Friday.
Prosecutors say Watson lured his wife to Las Vegas from their Ontario, Calif., home in 2006, seemingly to celebrate her 50th birthday. But prosecutors say he planned the murder of Everilda “Evie” Watson for more than a month.
Prosecutors say Watson shot his wife, then cut her up with a band saw. In letters written from jail, he admitted cooking and eating part of the body.
