Gun scare prompts lockdown at suburban NY school
BLAUVELT, N.Y. — A suburban New York school district says its middle school went into lockdown when a student was found with what appeared to be a gun.
In a message on its website, the district said the lockdown began at 9 a.m. Tuesday at South Orangetown Middle School in Blauvelt. It said police were securing the building and no one was injured.
The lockdown came almost a year after an irate parent barged into the same school and held the district superintendent at gunpoint.
In 2009, former police officer Peter Cocker walked into the school with a handgun but was wrestled to the floor. Cocker was sentenced to five years in prison.
Blauvelt is a bedroom community and hamlet of Orangetown about 20 miles north of New York City.
