Calif. judge dismisses slain athlete lawsuit
LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles judge has thrown out a lawsuit filed by the parents of a high school football star who sued the sheriff’s department for releasing from jail an illegal immigrant suspected of killing their son.
Superior Court Judge Charles Palmer found Wednesday the law doesn’t support the wrongful death case brought by Jamiel and Anita Shaw.
The Shaws claimed gang member 21-year-old Pedro Espinoza should have been turned over to immigration authorities instead of being freed.
Espinoza is accused of killing 17-year-old Jamiel Shaw II, a standout running back, after getting out of jail.
He is charged with murder and is awaiting trial.
