Fatal shooting reported outside MacDill AFB

TAMPA, Fla. — One person was killed in a shooting at an entrance gate to MacDill Air Force Base, city fire officials said Wednesday.

Tampa Fire Rescue teams were called to the gate at 6:47 p.m. on Wednesday. U.S. Air Force Spokesman Major Richard Johnson said the incident is being investigated but it doesn’t appear to be an act of terrorism

It appears that vehicular traffic is not being allowed onto the base south of downtown Tampa. As of 8:30 p.m., about a dozen cars were waiting at the gate. A uniformed military officer stood near barricades, and several media outlets congregated in a parking lot across the street from the entrance gate.

Tampa police and MacDill base security were investigating. However Tampa Police Spokeswoman Laura McElroy said the Air Force officials will release all information about the shooting. MacDill spokeswoman Airman Katherine Holt said more information would be available within the hour.

MacDill is located south of downtown Tampa. It is home to U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East and Central Asia.
