Fatal shooting outside MacDill AFB in Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. — A man who sped away from base security on a motorcycle after an altercation at MacDill Air Force Base was shot and killed Wednesday evening, the military said.
U.S. Air Force spokesman Maj. Richard Johnson said the shooting is being investigated but it doesn’t appear to be an act of terrorism.
At about 6 p.m., security was called to the altercation, which wasn’t described, at a camping area inside the base, said a statement from the Air Force. A veteran was involved in the altercation with another person, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the incident publicly.
One of the people sped away on his motorcycle and security tried to stop him, the news release said.
He evaded them and went to the Dale Mabry Gate. Law enforcement engaged him and he was shot, the military said. No one else was injured. The Air Force did not release the dead man’s name.
“Our security forces personnel acted promptly to safeguard the base and its personnel,” Col. Larry Martin, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander, said in the statement.
The base was not under lockdown but the Dale Mabry Gate remains closed. The RV camping area is only used by people with base access.
Outside the base, about a dozen cars were waiting at the gate. A uniformed military officer stood near barricades, and several media outlets congregated in a parking lot across the street from the entrance gate.
Tampa police and MacDill base security were investigating. However, Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said Air Force officials will release all information about the shooting.
MacDill, located south of downtown Tampa, is home to U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East and Central Asia.
