Nigeria’s oil region ex-governor arrested in Dubai
ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria’s anti-graft agency says a former governor of Nigeria’s oil-rich Delta state has been arrested in Dubai for corruption charges.
Farida Waziri, the head of the agency, says James Ibori, a prominent politician, was arrested by international police agency Interpol on Wednesday.
Waziri told reporters Thursday that Ibori was being questioned.
Waziri says the former governor was wanted by the Nigerian anti-graft agency on charges of stealing 44 billion naira ($292 million) in state funds while he was in office in the West African country.
Nigeria’s government, fueled by oil revenues, is considered by analysts to be one of the world’s most corrupt.
